Curriculum

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is an accredited four-year program, which includes rotations in:

  • Obstetrics
  • Gynecology
  • Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery
  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology

Residents also participate in patient care (Continuity Clinics) within the University Center for Gynecology on a regularly scheduled basis.

Weekly didactics include Grand Rounds, STATs/M&M (Morbidity & Mortality), and Team-Based Learning. Other specialty conferences are offered on a once-a-month basis including Journal Club, Research Lecture/Project Reports. We also feature learning experiences through telecommunication with UAMS telehealth/telemedicine reaching over 70 sites across Arkansas.

Simulators are used to aid in the education of residents as well as provide updates for OBGYN faculty members. A surgical skills class is mandatory for every first-year resident, which offers the resident an opportunity to improve their skills in wound closure.

Access to an on-site library, computers and books in the call room, and department researchers and faculty, offers continual opportunities for research and academic growth within Obstetrics and Gynecology. Research projects are presented by PGY-3 residents on a yearly basis, and are encouraged to present and/or publish research projects outside of the UAMS arena in the PGY-4 year.

The residency curriculum includes a range of experiences designed to provide exposure to both general and sub-specialty fields within OBGYN, in addition to critical and primary care. UAMS’ program:

  • Is structured in accordance with the educational objectives for residents in OBGYN as outlined by the Council of Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG).
  • Is designed to ensure competency in all six of the core competencies required by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
  • Prepares residents to be certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG).
